Who We Are
Zabaan is a language school founded by Ali Taqi and built around a simple idea: language learning should be rigorous, personal, and deeply connected to culture.
Since its founding, Zabaan has taught thousands of students from around the world, including expatriates, diplomats, university students and professors, researchers, professionals, heritage learners, and lifelong language enthusiasts.
Our teachers bring together academic training, cultural knowledge, and years of classroom experience. Whether you are beginning a new language, returning to one you once knew, or working toward advanced fluency, Zabaan offers the structure, guidance, and support to help you make meaningful progress.
Ali Taqi
Founder, Director, and Teacher
Originally from Chicago, Ali Taqi is the founder and head instructor of Zabaan. He holds a B.A. in International Studies with a minor in Asian Languages and Literatures from Loyola University Chicago.
After teaching extensively in Chicago and Seattle, Ali moved to New Delhi in 2009 to establish Zabaan as a premier centre for language learning.
With a deep interest in linguistics, semantics, syntax, bilingualism, and language pedagogy, Ali combines academic insight with practical classroom experience. He has personally taught more than 100,000 classes and continues to actively teach Hindi, Urdu, English, and Spanish. He is known for helping students move from complete beginner level to confident, advanced fluency.
Who Would Benefit
Zabaan is for anyone who wants to learn a language seriously and meaningfully, regardless of background, level, or previous learning experience.
Some students come to us for everyday conversation. Others study for academic research, professional work, exams, travel, heritage learning, literature, classical texts, or long-term residence in India.
Whatever your reason for learning, Zabaan helps you build a strong foundation, develop confidence, and make steady progress.
What We Do
Zabaan is a private language school based in New Delhi, offering expert instruction both online and in person.
We teach a wide range of modern and classical languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Punjabi, Bengali, Persian, Arabic, Tamil, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and English.
Our courses include private lessons, small group classes, intensive programs, script courses, reading courses, and customized training for individuals, universities, embassies, and organizations.
Which zabaan — which language — will you choose to learn?
How We Teach
At Zabaan, our teaching is adaptive, personalized, and rooted in one essential question: Is the student learning to speak and understand?
Each student’s path is different. We tailor the pace, schedule, materials, and focus of every course to the learner’s goals — whether the aim is basic conversation, exam preparation, professional communication, literary reading, or advanced mastery of grammar and nuance.
Our classes balance clear explanation with active practice. Students learn grammar in a structured way, but always with the larger goal of communication, fluency, and cultural understanding.
Homework is assigned where useful, and formal exams are optional. Instead, teachers continuously assess students through class performance, informal review, and clearly defined learning objectives.
We know that language learning can feel both exciting and intimidating. That is why our teachers combine academic seriousness with patience, warmth, and encouragement.
Why Was Zabaan Founded
Traditional language instruction has often been dominated by large institutions where the focus is heavily text-based, exam-oriented, or disconnected from real communication.
Zabaan was founded to offer something different: a language school that combines grammatical depth, speaking practice, cultural context, and individual attention.
Our goal is not simply to help students memorize vocabulary or complete a textbook. Our goal is to help them enter the language — to think in it, speak through it, read it with understanding, and connect with the people and cultures behind it.
How to Start Learning a Language
Getting started is simple. Contact our Student Coordinator and tell us what you would like to learn, your current level, your goals, and your preferred schedule.
We will help you choose the right course, teacher, format, and pace.
Students may join group courses, take private online lessons, study in person at our New Delhi centre, or arrange customized programs for personal, academic, or professional needs.
Our Language Centre
Zabaan’s main language centre is located in East of Kailash, New Delhi.
The centre has four comfortable classrooms, each designed for small-group and private instruction. Students studying in person can expect a welcoming learning environment, freshly made chai and coffee, and a quiet space for serious study.
Most Zabaan courses are conducted online, but in-person classes and visits to the centre may be arranged by appointment.

I've been taking Hindi and Urdu classes with Riya at Zabaan (both online and in Delhi) for almost two years now, and I love it! Each class is tailored to my level and needs, and for the first time I can notice my language skills actually improving after years of unsatisfying learning. Cannot recommend Zabaan and Riya enough!

I have been taking private hindi lessons online at Zabaan from summer 2024. I am German and I live in South Africa. Before I came to South Africa I had the opportunity to check out classes in person. From 2024 I enjoy my teachers' Vartika and Priya's excellent knowledge of hindi grammar as well as their method of teaching. I have learned a lot. Their commitment to keep improving my skills made me choose Zabaan again to further my studies for a final exam in Germany. In addition, student coordinator Olivia is always available to schedule classes and help out in any way she can. I would choose Zabaan again and again when it comes to learning hindi at ease and in a supportive environment. Thank you, Zabaan!

Learning English with Rudraksh has been such a positive and motivating experience for me. He’s the youngest teacher I’ve studied with, but his teaching skills, patience, and clarity are truly impressive. Even though my English is around A2 level, he always finds ways to make everything easy to understand. We’ve been reading “Short Stories in English”, which suits my level perfectly. Whenever I come across difficult words or pronunciation, he explains them in simple English with clear and practical examples. I really appreciate that he doesn’t just ask me to memorize vocabulary instead, he helps me understand how to use words naturally in sentences. Within just a few weeks, I’ve noticed real progress. I’ve gone from reading word by word to speaking and reading in full sentences with much more confidence. I feel genuinely lucky to have such a patient, kind, and dedicated teacher. His lessons make me enjoy learning English more and more each time.

I’ve had the good fortune of a rather special relationship with Zabaan—in that, over the past several years, I’ve been both a student and a teacher there. After learning Urdu in 2008, I was looking for ways to stay connected with the language when I came across Zabaan through an internet search. Ali generously offered me the help of their in-house Urdu scholar, Reza, if I could take on the task of translating a set of stories from classical into English. While I’m certain that I severely tested Reza’s patience with my newly acquired, faltering Urdu, I began a relationship with an organisation that, as a language lover and lifelong learner, I’ve had the privilege of turning to time and again. A couple of years later, I was thrilled when Ali invited me to teach Punjabi online for Zabaan—an engagement that continued for the next couple of years. Then, courtesy of Zabaan, I took Farsi classes with a particularly interesting individual. While I’m no longer an active student or teacher with them today, Ali remains my go-to person for any questions related to Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit—or any language, really—especially when even the internet falls short. I can always count on an answer from him; and if he doesn’t have it, he’ll make sure to find it—often along with additional context, book recommendations and more. In a world where everyone is a surface-level expert, it is a relief to know that there are people like Ali, and places like Zabaan, that do justice to the word expert. Their approach to language teaching speaks for itself in the sheer number of students they’ve taught. I see a future in which a Zabaan language certification holds the same weight as those from the world’s top language institutions—if, indeed that future hasn’t already arrived.

I spent two months taking full-time in-person classes at Zabaan, and I'm very glad that I did. All of my teachers (Tamanna, Anita, Priya) were top notch. They are super knowledgeable, kind and helpful. Their expertise in teaching Hindi as a second language was so valuable, and I would love to continue classes with them in the future.

Ms. Anita Goswami is punctual, consistent, hardworking, very knowlegable and dedicated to my childs unique need and growth curve in learning Hindi language. With her in the lead I can see my childs language confidence and understanding improve. My only recommendation for maximising productivity, childs engagement and knowlege retention is by use of altenative tools to keep kids engaged and curious during their class time as learners learn in diff ways visual, written, audio. Thanks Ms. Goswami for a great year of learning Hindi and more to come!

I couldn't recommend Zabaan more highly. I have been taking private online lessons with Ali since 2020 (we began with Hindi and added Urdu in 2024). Ali's love and curiosity for the languages he teaches are truly contagious. And his patience and generosity with his students are remarkable. Each session is rewarding and enjoyable. I look forward to studying at Zabaan for many years to come.

My experience with Zabaan was great all around! I had already taken some online Hindi classes, but doing them in person in Delhi was even better. Even though it was only six weeks, I feel like I was able to improve considerably - which is thanks to my two amazing teachers, Anita and Tamanna. With lots of skill, patience and fun, they taught me the beautiful Hindi language. The school itself is located in a nice and leafy neighborhood of South Delhi, easily reachable by metro or other means of transport. I fully recommend Zabaan for anybody wishing to improve their language skills, and I hope to be back in Delhi soon for more classes!

I learned to read Urdu in a month! This was truly a transformative experience. The instructor Ali is very patient, answers all of your questions, and shares linguistic and historical context wherever he can. This elevates the language learning experience to include explaining the cultural landscape of South Asia, and by extension (for Hindi speakers), our own heritage. It was a wonderful course - definitely worth my time. I would recommend it to anyone!

I've been learning reading and writing in urdu on and off, but my classes at Zabaan have been so encouraging and accessible that I can finally read the script! I'm grateful to them for generously offering free script learning courses. There's much care and effort invested in each learner's progress. I was so pleased with the course that I signed up for more advanced classes. In my classes with Ali, I've learnt about the history of the script, language structure, and etymology, which has added insight even to the repetitive routine of copying out alphabets. I am more confident than ever about staying with my language practice.

I recently attended the free online Hindi writing course at Zabaan Language Institute, and it was a great experience. The instructor was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, patient, and very supportive, which made the sessions engaging and enjoyable. The course included helpful practice exercises and homework, which really encouraged me to work on my skills outside of class. It was clear the teacher cared about each student’s progress and was happy to answer questions and provide guidance. I’d definitely recommend this course to anyone looking to improve their Hindi writing skills and am interested in exploring more courses with Zabaan in the future.

Zabaan always encourages and inspires me as I learn Hindi. If you are a Hindi lesson hopper, Zabaan will be the final destination. Highly recomended to learners of any level. As a gratitude to Zabaan teachers, I dedicate this poem, written great assistance with ChatGPT 🙂 इल्म का गुलज़ार है, ये प्यारी सी ज़बान, हर लफ़्ज़ में खिलती है, उजाली सी ज़बान।

The best school in the world for learning Hindi, without a doubt. I have been learning over the past 1.5 months and can say that my progression has been exponential thanks to the amazing teachers at this school, who are highly professional and make the learning experience seamless. From knowing almost no Hindi at the start 1.5 months ago, I can confidently hold conversation, read news articles, and write Devanagari. Special shoutouts to Tamánna, Jeevika, Anita, Riya, Rachayta and Ali who have all made my experience so special and enriching, I am super grateful to them. I completed the 8 hours Urdu script course from Zabaan recently. It was an efficient and quick way of learning the script. My tutor, Ms Vartika Pande, was very good. She made the course both knowledgeable and fun and I thoroughly enjoyed learning the script from her. Being an online course, one can learn from the comfort of their homes instead of having to travel to a centre. I would highly recommend the course as well as my tutor for anyone wanting to learn this beautiful script.

I have been learning English with Zabaan for the past two years. Before delving into my review, I must acknowledge that my relationship with English was far from satisfactory. In the past, I attempted to learn from various sources, including a few other esteemed institutions, but none could effectively address my struggles with the language. When I felt that learning English had become an insurmountable challenge, my friend Malini recommended Zabaan School for Languages. Intrigued by their website, I contacted Zabaan and commenced my English lessons with Ali. Prior to this, I had not watched a single English movie, series, or documentary because I simply could not understand anything they were say. Ali encouraged me to explore suitable English content, and initially he met with my resistance. However, he consistently motivated me, providing compelling reasons to watch various interesting shows. While many people turn to Ali for language learning, my experience with with him also evolved into a personal and spiritual journey. Ali Taqi is a deeply knowledgeable person and I'm sure anyone who has come into contact with him would agree with the same. I will forever cherish this enriching experience. Zabaan was more language school, it was a place of higher learning. Throughout this journey, I discovered aspects about myself and the world that I had never known. Although my formal education with Zabaan may conclude soon, my learning will be perpetual. As an Urdu storyteller, I know the nuances of language, and Ali's exceptional way of explaining things never cease to amaze me. Heartfelt thanks to my ustad Ali, and to Zabaan in general, for this transformative experience. I am officially an English speaker and I can not tell you how happy I am for it. To anyone aspiring to learn a language, Zabaan is the best in world.

Coming from the United States of America, I studied with Zabaan for 7 weeks in India, learning Hindi. It was one of the greatest experiences I've had, and I learned so many new things. The instructors are very kind and patient with all experience levels. I'd like to give a special shout-out to my instructors, Tamanna, Shanti, Anita Ma'am, and Vartika Ma'am. They were the best teachers I could have asked for (very welcoming, helpful, taught with engaging activities that made language learning fun by using real-world scenarios, and funny!) and we all developed an amazing relationship over those 7 weeks. I still keep in touch with them all, practicing my Hindi skills with them despite being across the world. Today, along with Marathi, I speak Hindi at home with my family, with another instructor in the US, and every chance I get over the phone/text. I highly recommend learning with Zabaan!

I had such a great experience with Ali and Zabaan. I (American with no Hindi exposure) moved to Delhi for work and lived there for about 8 months. I signed up for Hindi classes right away and they became an integral part of my experience and getting accustomed to life in Delhi. By the end of the 8 months, I was able to read Devanagari script and write basic sentences, as well as have basic conversations with others in Hindi. Learning Hindi also helped me adjust to work as well by better understanding context and culture - even though most of my work was in English, Hindi was still present. It was also great to have the in-person options in Delhi, but also virtual options flexible in timing whenever I was traveling. Ali is an amazing teacher who is both patient and motivating. I learned a a lot about Indian history and culture from him, in addition to some great tips for travel around India. Would highly recommend Zabaan for anyone looking to learn South Asian languages.

I began learning Urdu four years ago with Zabaan but discontinued it for three years. I restarted with Ali about five months ago, with a speed of one page/ hour. I read my first novel slowly at this speed but within four months of weekly lessons, I completed this fantastic book in record time. I even stopped looking at my screen at night and took the novel to my bed! Rediscovered the excitement of reading after a long time , all thanks to Ali. He teaches with scientific and historical perspective, why a certain alphabet is used and why not another. This adds a special dimension to Urdu. I look forward to enriching my vocabulary with his guidance. He lends me big fat books to encourage me to read more. I simply love learning Urdu at zabaan/ Ali thank you .

I’ve enjoyed every class with Ali and the Zabaan school. From knowing no written Hindi and very limited spoken Hindi, I’ve been able to give speeches in Hindi and read and write it. Ali’s teaching method has also enabled me to convert my Hindi learning into reading and writing Urdu. It’s been a fun three years of study.

For one year, I search for a school worldwide that would allow me to learn Hindi online with a very serious and technical approach. Zabaan was the only online school that I found that matched all my criteria. Firstly, the offer in terms of languages is very plural. Secondly, one can do all the classes online, without being charged for unaffordable amounts of money (some schools only target the USA dollar public). Thirdly, Zabaan seemed to be a place where languages are threaded as such, without culture, political or religious bias or indoctrination. After almost one year of classes, I can now say that they went beyond my expectations. I was assigned Vartika Pande as my teacher and I couldn’t be happier. Vartika was and is always attentive with my needs and expectations, and very comprehensive with the way that I like to learn languages. Her approach was to follow an excellent manual, adding other types of lessons to break the monotony and to add more value to the learning experience when needed. This was exactly what I was searching for, structure but with modern tools. The level of professionalism is equally balance with her soft skills, this is expressed by the she explains some more complex aspects of Hindi while understanding that some topics might be completely new for an European audience. Besides the learning experience, I must admit that both Vartika’s and Keziah’s understanding and flexibility in terms of schedule, changing time zones are beyond reproach. When needed I’ve been allocated other teachers, and schedule adaptations have never been an issue. On a complementary note, both the Zabaan website and the support used for the lessons show that the school, the teachers and the staff are committed to do a serious job. To conclude, I think I will stay with Zabaan for a while and I feel like starting other languages once Hindi and Urdu are in an advance stage. Thank you so much

Offering my highest commendations here for the Zabaan School for Languages, and particularly, for Urdu language instructor Vartika Pande. I’m a Hindi and English speaker who had zero familiarity with Nastaliq. Within just a few lessons with Vartika, I was able to read short sentences and start putting my own sentences together. I’m rapidly expanding a vocabulary of Urdu-language words, and of course, it’s fascinating to learn about the historical routes through Persian and Arabic, as well as the similarities and contrasts with contemporary Hindi. But more than that, Vartika is such a kind and generous teacher and has been so accommodating with complex scheduling for classes across multiple time-zones. Five stars!

Vartika Pande is a very good and experienced language teacher. She comes prepared with a plan for every ZOOM lesson. Vartika is friendly but not casual - always the teacher and keeps you focused and working for the duration of each lesson. A serious pro. I highly recommend her. Zabaan school is easy to deal with and has been very helpful and flexible in terms of scheduling. Prices seem reasonable to me. A +

My one-on-one Bangla classes with Dipanwita Saha have been amazing. She has been teaching me for the last four months and uses a combination of the standard textbook and the more traditional Sahaj Paat written by Tagore; and a mix of reading, writing, and speaking exercises. The combination works really well especially the Sahaj Paat, which is a lot of fun and gives you a feel not just for the language but the cultural world of Bangla. I highly recommend Dipanwita as a Bangla teacher for new learners as well as for those who have some elementary knowledge.

I have been studying Urdu with Raza since five years now. Initially I joined Ali´s group course for the Urdu script and then quickly some students were shifted to Raza to learn more Urdu. The classes in the institute with Chai and vivid discussions in our group were legendary and friendship building. Since I am back in Germany I take weekly online class with Raza. It is a wonderful learning experience and I am so thankful for the wonderful material that Raza prepares. Be it day to day spoken Urdu or Urdu prose or poetry, we cover a vast range of topics. At the moment we are going through a poetry course Raza has assembled for beginners and his vocabulary lists are amazingly well prepared in Devnageri English and Urdu. Who ever is interested in Urdu literature, be it prose or poetry - Raza is so patient, kind and knowledgeable. Thank you so much!

As someone who has learned Hindi now for the third time after starting and stopping, this experience with Zabaan has by far exceeded my other language learning experiences. Zabaan has been incredibly accommodating with adjusting to my varying learning styles and preferences, enabling me to try small group classes in person, as well as one-on-one classes virtually, all at times that work well for my schedule. They are incredibly flexible and are always looking to provide students with the best possible learning experience. My teachers Raza, Anshu, and Riya have all worked with me to vastly expand my vocabulary and understanding of grammar, and it’s amazing to see how much my reading comprehension and writing skills have increased as well. Each of them are so talented in making class enjoyable and productive. I’m always able to connect class topics to subjects that I’m personally interested in, and always have so much fun conversing with them. Big cheers to Zabaan for helping me navigate life in India with this beautiful language!

I enrolled in 120 hours of private, online Hindi lessons through Zabaan as a total beginner, in order to gain some language facility during my 9 months of research in India. My experience with the school was terrific. I had two teachers, Vartika and Manisha, who had different and complimentary teaching styles and coordinated with one another to make sure the class was moving along at a pace that was good for me. Both of them seemed to genuinely enjoy teaching, which makes any class far more fun. It’s hard to imagine a more efficient course to cover all the fundamental Hindi grammar and develop skills for reading, writing, and speaking. I would highly recommend Zabaan to anyone serious about learning a language.

I absolutely love learning Hindi with Zabaan and my fabulous tutor, Riya. I have spent an hour online with her each week for over a year now and in this time I have learned the Devanagari script, I am able to read quite well, I have moved through the grammar and vocab of the text books and we are now having little conversations each week. I love the one on one lessons as I get to ask heaps of questions and we move at a pace personalised to my progress. I highly recommend learning a language with Zabaan. I look forward to class every week!

Had an awesome experience learning gurmukhi script from Anshu ma'am at Zabaan. The beginner course has helped me immensely in reading and writing the script. Thanks a lot Zabaan for making such courses available to anyone interested in learning these North Indian languages. Highly recommended for anyone wishing to learn gurmukhi script.

Teachers at Zabaan - our first teacher Riya Tyagi and Second teacher Ali Taqi are extra ordinary teachers. They know how to teach. For me before joining Zabaan Urdu script was the toughest. But the dedicated Zabaan teachers made it easy. Teaching, testing of our knowledge and giving home work everything was so fantastic. Never thought that one can learn the script within 5 classes and in 7.5 hours. What else? the course was free. Wish that with your guidance and my practice, very soon I would be able to read and write fluent Urdu. Thanks a lot. Dhanyavad. Shukriya.

I've been taking Hindi classes with Ali for the past couple of years, and it's made such a difference for me. I grew up in Chennai, hearing little to no Hindi around me, and so really felt the need to learn the language when I moved to Mumbai for work. I was insecure in speaking Hindi but after classes with Ali at Zabaan, I've grown in confidence and have reached a stage where I'm able to have conversations, professional and personal, without worrying (like I used to) about how I sound or if I'm making mistakes. There's an ease I feel with the language now that's very freeing. Thanks Ali and Zabaan for teaching Hindi in a way that's accessible, fun and non-judgmental.

After several months of private online Hindi lessons, I can thoroughly recommend Zabaan. My friendly, patient and knowledgeable teacher, Riya, not only provides clear explanations of grammar and vocabulary, but also presents the language within a cultural context. Classes are flexible, informative and always interesting. After years of inconsistent attempts at self-learning Hindi, thanks to Zabaan I am finally making real progress.

I highly recommend the Hindi language courses at Zabaan School. Teachers' explanations are to the point. They teach us various things not only about Hindi but also Indian culture. All of the staff is very kind and friendly. Also, the food there is very delicious. I would have some tea (When it comes to this tea, the ginger really did the trick. That is the most delicious tea I've ever had.)while studying with my teachers and friends. Studying Hindi at Zabaan School was an amazing experience to me!If you want to learn Hindi in India, you should definitely go to Zabaan School.

Zabaan is the best. I’ve taken four different courses there in Farsi and Hindi, and each have been amazing. There are remarkably few good tools to learn colloquial Hindi, and that makes the work of my current Hindi teacher Juhi all the more amazing. Classes with her are great fun and we end up chatting about the most bizarre range of topics (between being told off for conjugating a verb wrong). I’ve now been taking classes with her for about a year and wow has my Hindi improved! Here’s to many more classes! I also have to commend the way that Zabaan dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic. My classes swiftly moved online with barely a hit to the teaching itself. Within days, Juhi had sent me PDF’s of Manto and Hindi Harry Potter.

I took classes at Zabaan for 4 weeks after studying Hindi on my own for ~2 years in the US. The improvement I got in my Hindi skill from Zabaan was HUGE; enough to significantly increase my score in the language test offered by my employer. During the 4 weeks of classes I got to experience nearly every teacher at Zabaan. They are ALL absolutely excellent, though I found Juhi to be my favorite. She is personable, energetic and has experience learning multiple languages herself, which I think helps her better understand the challenges a language student faces. My favorite part about lessons with Juhi was engaging in authentic Hindi conversations about topics we were both interested in. It was great being able to discuss a real topic with her as if we were just chatting, but then she would still interject with grammar tips when I would make an error speaking. This helped me tremendously in learning to express myself naturally and correctly. I will never forget my time at Zabaan and cannot wait to go back!

I took an intensive beginner Hindi course with Zabaan for a month in Delhi in 2019. The teachers were incredibly knowledgeable and dedicated. The course was fast paced but comprehensive. Since returning to Australia I have begun online lessons with Rachayta. She is a fantastic teacher who is able to explain the origin and cultural context of words. She has made Hindi grammar easier to understand with plenty of examples; and she caters the lessons to my interests. I highly recommend learning Hindi at Zabaan.

I have been a student at Zabaan for nearly 8 months. Going through a number of their programs has been a fantastic experience and has greatly improved my Hindi. I also must commend their competency demonstrated throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. They have rather effortlessly moved their teaching online in a way which maintains the quality of their education. I have mostly worked with Rachayta while at Zabaan. She has a brilliant ability to recognize common errors I make and identify the appropriate grammatical rules to help me learn from those mistakes. Trained as a linguist, I am also always appreciative of her ability to deconstruct any word and explicate its etymology. This skill makes learning both interesting and clarifying, allowing myself to draw useful connections. Rachayta's sharp ears for pronunciation also enable me to not only be able to understand Hindi, but to be understood when speaking! Zabaan as a whole is a fantastic institution. I am eager to rejoin them in person when possible and am confident that their continued efforts have greatly improved my Hindi. Thanks Zabaan and team, and I highly recommend for all those interested in learning languages!

I have lived in India for 10 years of my life and struggled to learn Hindi that entire time. Thanks to Zabaan's online classes, I finally have an opportunity to learn Hindi properly. I have tried every other method: Teach Yourself Hindi, a personal tutor, learning from friends, Duolingo, Drops, and Rosetta Stone. None of these has even come close to my experience with Zabaan. The Zabaan teachers really know what they are doing. Hindi instruction for foreign language speakers is difficult. It requires teaching (and reteaching) the Devanagari alphabet, pronunciation, minimal pairs, and other basics that my past teachers considered too boring to engage with. It requires an incredible amount of patience, as foreign language students like myself will struggle with pronunciation, listening, and even basic grammar comprehension for many months. It also requires that the teacher is both (a) able to use multiple teaching methods attuned to the different learning styles of multiple students and (b) reach into a deep knowledge of Hindi, Urdu, and Sanskrit to answer peculiar questions about the language that other Indic-language speakers are unlikely to ask. Teachers at Zabaan have proven capable in all these skills. They make their classes interesting and engaging. The online classes mean I can continue my Hindi education with them regardless of which city or country I am currently in. This is the system of Hindi instruction I have been in search of for over a decade and I will happily recommend Zabaan to anyone I meet who wants to learn Hindi.

I highly recommend the Hindi language courses at Zabaan! Yesterday I finished the Conversational Hindi course that was really useful and interesting! I was looking for a course that was focused on conversation because I had already studied Hindi at university, and this course was perfect for me! In addition to conversation, of course we also studied basic and important grammatical concepts. Vartika has always been very clear, professional, friendly, always ready to answer to our questions, ready to solve our doubts and able to create fun and useful educational activities at the same time. Bahot shukriya Vartika and Zabaan School! I hope I can join you again for another interesting course! Greetings from Italy!

I came for the 4 week group intensive beginner Hindi course at Zabaan. The best part was the instructors who are well trained and highly knowledgable of the language. The courses are well structured and include a healthy mix of instruction, speaking practice and writing practice. Although only a four week course for beginners, I am leaving able to have a much better knowledge of Hindi when around Hindi speaking friends as well as being able to communicate on basic things myself. Looking forward to continuing with the school in the future and would recommend for those seeking Hindi classes in Delhi.

Zabaan offers rigorous, accessible, professional language instruction of the highest quality--and I say this as a college professor and full-time teacher myself. I studied Hindi privately with Ali Taqi, who took me from zero (not even able to read the script) through an entire first-year curriculum in a matter of months. His teaching style--honed over years of training and experience as a language pedagogue--is efficient, effective, careful, and endlessly patient. I have referred some of my own students to Zabaan who have had equally positive experiences in the Hindi language group classes. I have nothing but praise for Zabaan and the dedicated founders and teachers who make it one of the world's best places to learn Indian languages.

Zabaan offers instruction of a quality that is on par-and may be even superior- to that of the best universities in the world. I took private Hindi lessons with Rachyita Gupta as my lead instructor and greatly appreciated her mastery of the language. The deep knowledge of linguistics she acquired through completion of a master’s degree and sheer passion clearly showed. It allowed her to explain concepts and how Hindi works in a way that is easy to understand for a non-native speaker. She took the time to develop an individualized learning plan for me, sparing me the drudgery of cookie-cutter curricula. She also focused on giving me tips for self-study so I can continue to learn autonomously when away from Delhi. Beyond language instructions, she proved willing to help me understand India better, including facets of its many cultures, how it is changing and the challenges it faces today. I found all of my instructors to be on time, well-prepared for lessons and highly responsive to my interests. In my opinion, the premium costs of the private lessons at Zabaan is well reflected in the quality of their teaching.

I have completed two Hindi intensives at Zabaan and I have to say that this school is amazing. The knowledge of Hindi grammar, sentence structure, script, tenses, etc. from every teacher is impeccable. They are truly grammartarians. The progressive order of learning grammar sets a solid foundation for understanding the language. My reading, writing, spelling, and speaking has vastly improved. It is very apparent that the teachers are well experienced not only in grammar knowledge but being able to effectively teach it. The way that they drill on speaking while teaching the grammar stretches you to learn and solidify the information. They cannot be stumped by a question. They balance answering questions and moving through the content beautifully. The professionalism is top notch, the facilities are some of the best I have seen in Delhi, and the hand cooked lunches and chai/coffee are so good. I highly recommend Zabaan for anyone serious about learning languages. David H.

I highly recommend Zabaan. I've taken classes at Zabaan during two trips to India, and I will be back. I have a decently large comparison set, having studied languages at universities and private language schools in the US, China, and India. In my experience, Zabaan stands out for its combination of teachers who know Hindi in depth but also have an incredibly profound and helpful meta-understanding of the language--things like grammar, syntax, and tone/context. The intro class has several teachers who rotate, which I found was a fantastic combination of native speakers (with obvious benefits as teachers) and non-native learners who have the unique insights that only outsiders can bring. For example, I was struggling with how to pronounce two of the t's in Hindi. Then one day, an Australian teacher taught me the difference between the two in a single insightful moment. Added bonus: The home-cooked lunches and chai are also fantastic. Highly recommend.

I started taking classes at Zabaan in 2015 with the month-long basic intensive Hindi course. This was a great small group class that helped introduce me to the language and learn a great depth of knowledge about Hindi. I knew from that first experience with Zabaan that I would get high quality instruction tailored to my needs as a student. I’ve taken private one on one classes with Zabaan while in Delhi, as well as online classes when I’m back in the United States. The instructors tailor our lessons to my needs and interests, making each lessons enjoyable and educational. For example, I needed to improve on my listening ability, so Ali and I worked for 6-plus weeks on improving my listening. I noticed real improvement in my ability to understand everyday Hindi conversations in Delhi. Neha and Dhriti helped me learn vocabulary for my research and the proper grammatical structures needed in order to use such concepts. Raza was always patient and encouraging in our conversation classes. I truly feel that they care about me as a student and are dedicated to helping me improve towards my goal of fluency in Hindi. The environment at Zabaan is one of an enthusiastic community of language learners from all over the world. Additionally, the online courses are a great way for me to continue practicing speaking and listening while I am not in India. I like that I can schedule the online courses as they fit with my schedule and availability. I’ve taken Hindi classes elsewhere in both India and the U.S., and Zabaan continues to be the best language instruction I’ve encountered!

Here are some reasons why I decided to learn Hindi. First of all, I grew up in a Buddhist family; the customs and systems of thought in Buddhism has had deep influence on me. At first I thought learning Sanskrit would give me a key directly to the Sutras; however I soon realized that learning Sanskrit with absolutely no prior knowledge would be an intellectual feat. I found out that both Sanskrit and Hindi use the Devanagari script as its alphabet and many words in Hindi have their origin from Sanskrit, so I decided it would be a good idea to start off with Hindi. Secondly, I chose to learn Hindi because I wanted to give myself a challenge. After learning Italian and a little bit of French I realized that the European languages would have much in common with one another. To learn a language with a totally different alphabet and writing system would be much more difficult than learning another European language. This huge linguistic gap between Hindi and the languages which I already would give me a broader horizon of the world. Moreover, as I have a keen interest in linguistics, learning Hindi would give me more references to examine what I have learned in my linguistics courses. At this moment I am in the middle of my courses and after looking back I think it really required a lot of effort to reach this stage. At the beginning the main difficulty was matching each Devanagari letter with its pronunciation. After having managed that, the next thing was to endow these sounds and letter combinations with meaning. At the point where I am right now, the main task is to consolidate different grammar rules and keep learning new words. I want to thank the Zabaan team for giving me positive pressure and enlightening guidance throughout the learning process. This is my third week in New Delhi and I can already use simple colloquial language on the streets to express myself and avoid hassle.

Can't recommend highly enough. I took three weeks of a four week elementary Hindi intensive, and was in a small group of three students. Classes ran in the mornings Monday to Friday, leaving plenty of time for revision and other activities. Three teachers shared the classes, and each was in their own way very sensitive to the task of teaching foundational Hindi from English, with enough of the kind of hooks/sidenotes/nods to complexity that keep you engaged. The school itself is a fun place, there's a bit of an infectious love of language learning ... and its very very close to a metro station!

I joined Zabaan for the Urdu script course to learn how to read and write Urdu. My experience here has been absolutely wonderful and I'm glad I chose to go here. The pace and the structure of the course is very well-planned and I was delighted to find that I had begun reading Urdu after only three classes. The staff at Zabaan is extremely helpful and accommodating. I exchanged many emails with them before joining and they promptly responded to each of my queries. Ali is an amazing teacher to learn from. He's very patient and encouraging, and his passion for the language is easily reflected in his knowledge and teaching. I've immensely enjoyed each of his classes and would recommend anyone considering learning Urdu to join Zabaan without a second thought.
